For two years I worked at Oak Lawn Family Service. It was municipal agency owned and operated by the town itself, and all Oak Lawn residence got discounted treatment. I got to work with a very wide variety of clients from that area with a wide assortment of problems.

For two years I worked as a SASS worker. During this time I worked exclusively with those suffering psychiatric emergencies such as suicidiality, homicidiality and schizophrenia. I provided crisis counseling and case management services. I was also the person entrusted with decisions about who did and did not require to be hospitalized. It was my genuine philosophy that people in crisis be treated in the least restrictive environment possible. This meant only whisking a person off to a gloomy psych ward if absolutely necessary. More often than not I would come out to meet my clients as needed no matter where they were and what time of day at was. I can tell you I spent a good portion of my time, all throughout the night, traveling all over Cook, Will and Grundy counties to help people in need.

I spent the most recent four years at Catholic Charities in Aurora. We had a contract with the Department of Children and Family Services and I worked with many children and parents who found DCFS involved in their lives. I helped neglectful and troubled parents improve their lives and get their children back. I helped children separated from their families and placed into foster-care cope and transition. We saw clients from the community as well. I spent much of my time helping people suffering depression, anxiety and relationship problems. I also did a fair amount of time doing anger management work for people who needed it. What I did most and best of all was help people learn to better understand and take control of their lives even when everything in their world seemed to be going crazy.
